Obituary For Alicia Garibay DeLeon

Alicia Garibay DeLeon died peacefully in her home on November 10, 2021 at the age of 88. A beautiful and gregarious person, Mrs. DeLeon lit up the room with her infectious smile. Never without lipstick and always impeccably dressed, she is remembered fondly as“ una gran dama.”

Mrs. DeLeon was born in Laredo, Texas in 1933 where she lived her entire life. She learned to sew at a young age and made beautiful garments for herself with modest means. Her sunny outlook on life was well-reflected through her unparalleled sense of style. As a young woman, she worked as a receptionist for several local physicians before marrying Jose DeLeon, the love of her life. Mrs. DeLeon maintained a beautiful and inviting home for decades. This was a great source of pride for her as she loved hosting guests. She managed her household while raising three daughters. She curated beautiful childhood experiences for her children, filled with picnics and special trips. To her and Jose’s great delight, all three daughters became public school educators.

Mrs. DeLeon had many wonderful friends throughout life and was called “Licha” by those who knew her best, including Lalita, Mandy, and Mary. She loved music, especially Los Panchos, which always reminded her of her courtship with Jose. She had the great fortune of going on many trips with her sisters and her daughter’s families. She had wonderful adventures traveling with her sister Polly and brother in law, Rey. In her last decade, Mrs. DeLeon enjoyed regular standing dates on Saturdays for shopping and on Sundays for breakfast. She was known to enjoy a scalding cup of coffee. She lived a long and fulfilling life with great friends and close family.

A beloved matriarch, Mrs. DeLeon was an exceptional wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Mrs. DeLeon had a deep commitment to her family and their well-being. She made everything special.

Mrs. DeLeon is survived by her three daughters - Irma (Hector) Cobos of Houston, Sylvia (Romeo Jr.) Rodriguez of Laredo, and Patsy (Bahman “Gino”) Forotanrad of Austin; six grandchildren - Christina Alicia Cobos, Adriana Gabriela Rodriguez, Celina (Lionel) Baptista, Russell Forotanrad, Jose David Rodriguez, and Ryan Forotanrad, along with her great grandson Aiden Rodriguez and his mother Vanessa. Grandma Alice seldom missed a graduation, a school sporting event, or an awards ceremony. She also made the best deluxe breakfasts. She enjoyed many holidays surrounded by family, and especially loved Christmas. Her family will be sure to sing all her favorite carols every year in her memory. As she always said, “recordar es vivir.”

Mrs. DeLeon was preceded in death by her spouse of 59 years, Jose DeLeon+; her parents, Higinio+ and Soledad Garibay+; her siblings, Dora+ and Maximino+ Rubio, Higinio+ and Graciela Garibay, Pedro+ and Fili+ Garibay, Antonio+ and Delia+ Ruiz, Ray and Polly+ Peña, Ventura+ and Gregoria Garibay, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Adonis Zuniga-Goldwater, who cared for Mrs. DeLeon for many years. The family extends a special thanks and great love to Dora Vela, Mrs. DeLeon’s esteemed caregiver and friend. Mrs. DeLeon’s final days were peaceful thanks to the Laredo Hospice Team, including Sylvia Lozano and Nurses Cassandra and Adriana.

Mrs. DeLeon asked that her family commemorate her passing with a private memorial service and interment, presided by Rev. Leszek J. Waclawik of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where she and Jose wed. As a couple, they maintained a great reverence for Our Lady of Guadalupe.

My kids and my husband as well when the car would start beeping the alarm they we all go next door. I would see her all dress up and sweeping outside the apts. She would tell me I like to do it Rosalinda. I really enjoyed renting for almost three years next to her. I had the pleasure of making rice and flautas for her and one of her daughter the one from Austin. She will be miss so much. When Sylvia send me the message I was in shock. And called her and started crying was sad for the rest of the day. Since I met Sylvia got so close to her like if we knew each other for many years, share some stories and cried together. My beautiful Tia Licha, may she rest in peace. Sylvia and to your sisters and extended family my sincere and deepest condolences. We enjoyed having Tia over the couple of times and see how Mom (Biache) and Tia reminisce about their past. Not only that, but also play loteria and of course drink coffee with sweet bread. Tia era una persona muy linda. She will be greatly missed by many. Just to know that Tia passed a day after Mom gave me chills, but great joy to know that the only cousins that were left will now be in heaven together. One of my sister's said that days before passing my Mom called out Tia Licha's name. You all and Tia are in our prayers.
