Obituary For Lucia G. Godines
Our beloved mother, Lucy, age 92, was called by our Heavenly Father at her home on Sunday, May 20, 2007. Lucy was born in San Diego, Texas on April 13, 1915 to Eloisa and Emilio Garza. She attended school in San Antonio, Texas. Lucy met her future husband, Ramon, while she worked as a waitress in a café. They married six weeks later whereupon they moved to Laredo and were together for over 53 years. Their devotion to each other was deep and enduring, lasting beyond Ramon’s death in 1987. Along with Ramon’s two children from his first marriage, Cookie and Ramon Jr., their nineteen children were part of this very close knit family. Lucy’s family and church were the focus of her life. She still found time to pursue her passions of learning and of medicine. Lucy completed her nursing degree in 1959 at the age of 44, the same year she gave birth to her nineteenth child. She worked with her son, Dr. Renaldo Godines, from 1982 until 2000. As a member of Mother Cabrini Church for more than 70 years, she was a proud committee member of the Altar Society. Lucy enjoyed traveling with her sister, Emma to Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon and Canada. She often mentioned the beautiful gardens in Victoria, Canada. When she was 86, she went to her grandson’s (Andres Juarez) graduation in Rhode Island. She also visited New York City. Spirited in nature, she stood in line for over two hours to tour the Empire State Building. Friends and family were welcomed at Lucy’s home where a fresh pot of soup was always available. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren always knew where to get frozen kool-aid treats and cookies. Lucy was known for her special birthday cakes made from scratch. She never tired of listening to her children, also known as her “angels”. Lucy was preceded in death by her husband, Ramon Godines, children Rogelio Genaro, Rosita, Ruben, Baby, Rosalinda, Rogelio, Baby, Baby, Veronica, and Victor. Also preceding her death were her stepchildren, Cookie Valdez and Ramon Godines, Jr. She was the last remaining member of her birth family (Garza); her siblings Mami, Arturo, Emilio, Elvira, Eva, and Emma preceded her. Lucy will be sadly missed by her loving children: Ramiro (Pat), Ricardo (Tina), Rita (Ernesto A. Dominguez), Reynaldo (Viola), Rosario(Andy Juarez), Roque (Billie), Lucia (Juan Facundo), David (Ellen) and Annie (Ray Bolan): 47 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. Her many friends will miss her joyous laugh, her keen wit, her positive attitude and her devotion to her faith. Lucy always said “God has been so good to me”… Visitation will be Wednesday, May 23rd, at Mother Cabrini Church beginning at 5:30 p.m. Mass will be celebrated at 6:30 followed by the recitation of the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Father Gaytan of Mother Cabrini Church will be officiating. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Mother Cabrini Church with Father Tom Showalter of Church of St. John in Robstown, TX officiating . Burial will follow at the Catholic Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be her sons: Ramiro, Ricardo, Reynaldo, Roque and David plus her son-in-law, Ernesto A. Dominguez. In her memory, contributions may be made to her beloved church, Mother Cabrini, located at 3018 Davis Avenue, Laredo, TX, 78040. Funeral arrangements are under the directions of Nieto-Dickey Funeral Home, 802 Coke St.
