Not many know this, but my connection to my father-in-law began before I was even born! Kike and I were getting ready to graduate from high school and my family was invited over to the house one day to celebrate after we had attended our Senior Graduation Mass. I was a little nervous because it was the first time our families would be introduced to each other. My grandfather was living with us at the time, so he came along with us. To my mother's horror, when we entered the house, my grandfather takes one look at my future father-in-law and yells "Eres tu Gordo?" My mom was so embarrassed and didn't know what to do so she started apologizing for my grandfather's outburst! As it turned out, it was Gordo! Lol! That's what my grandfather used to call my father-in-law when they worked together in the same Chicago neighborhood. The same neighborhood where my mother's family lived back in the 70's, where Kike was born and where my own grandmother used to babysit him...before I even existed! My father-in-law used to share some of the fond memories he had of my grandfather and the time he spent up North. It was nice to be connected in that way. Sometimes, the world is a lot smaller than we ever imagine.

I remember when Mr. Manrique used to tell us about the Vietnam War. He would show us pictures of how young and slim he was back then. It is because of him that I learned to respect veterans of wars. He and his wife (Irma) lived for and loved their family dearly and that is something I will forever admire. They are missed. Our condolences to his family.
