Obituary For Manuel Flores

Manuel "La Moronga" Flores, 91, entered into eternal rest Saturday, January 13, 2018. Flores, a Laredoan who holds the record for hitting four home runs in the Rocky Mountain League in the early 1950's, began playing semi-pro ball at the age of 16. He played semi-pro from 1942 to 1949 in Dilley, Pearsall, San Antonio and Kingsville. In 1953, he was sent to Middleborough, KY., by the Laredo Apaches of the Gulf Coast League. He played in the league's all star game that year. In 1954, Flores played for the Culiacan, Sinaloa team in the Pacific Coast League. Among the players on that team were Laredoans Tomas Herrera, Armando Sanchez, and Romeo Cadena. He was later traded in 1955 by the Nuevo Laredo Tecolotes to the Fresnillo, Zacatecas farm club of the Liga del Centro, but because of an illness in his family, Flores did not report to his new club. Flores ended his career in the late 1950's in the Laredo Winter League, where he holds the record of hitting three home runs in a game and being a member of five championship teams.

Mr. Flores is preceded in death by his; wife, Lucia B. Flores; parents, Antonio (Ines) Flores; brother, Francisco Flores; sister, Ana Maria Flores Alaniz and daughter in law, Irene Quijano Flores.

He is survived by his; children, Manuel (Mary) Flores, Jr. and Jose Antonio Flores; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister in law; Mercedes Flores, and siblings; Tony Flores, Jr., Kiko Flores, Blas Flores, Chapo Flores and Eduardo Flores; as well as other family members and friends that will greatly miss him. The family will like to thank Vanessa and Juan Martinez for their devoted care for Mr. Flores.

Visitation will be held Thursday, January 18, 2018, from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Nieto Funeral Home & Crematory where a rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Friday, January 19, 2018 from the funeral home to Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 9:00 am. Interment will follow immediately in the Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Juan Martinez, Jr., Manuel Flores III., Jose Martinez III., Jordan Flores, Jose Martinez, Jr., Gilberto Flores, Arturo Flores, and Juan Martinez III.
